What to Do if You Have an Accident

A Step-by-Step Guide for Handling Accidents Safely and Responsibly

Experiencing a collision while on hire in a motorhome can be stressful, but following the correct steps ensures your safety and compliance with legal requirements. Here’s what to do:

What to Do Immediately

  1. Call the Police
If anyone has been injured, contact the police right away.

    • Dial 999 in the UK or 112 if you’re elsewhere in Europe.
  2. Call an Ambulance
If urgent medical attention is required, call an ambulance for assistance.

    • Use the same numbers: 999 in the UK or 112 in Europe.
  3. Stop and Stay at the Scene
Always stop and remain at the accident location, no matter how minor the collision.

    • Leaving the scene is a legal offence, especially if a person, domestic animal, vehicle, or roadside fixture has been injured or damaged.
  4. Keep Calm and Get Prepared

    • Stay calm and locate your high-visibility jacket, which is stored in your emergency box in the motorhome’s exterior locker. Ensure everyone traveling has one.
    • Prepare to take any safety precautions necessary.
  5. Make the Area Safe

    • Move the vehicle(s) to a safe place, preferably away from traffic.
    • If you cannot move the vehicle(s), call the police and turn on your hazard lights.
    • Place a warning triangle at least 45 metres (50 yards) behind your motorhome to alert approaching traffic. Adjust the position if you’re near a bend or corner.
  6. Ensure Passenger Safety

    • Have all passengers leave the motorhome and stand well away from passing traffic, ideally on nearby land or a safe bank. This is particularly important if there’s a risk of another vehicle striking your motorhome.
