What to Do If Your Motorhome Breaks Down on the Motorway

Breaking down on a motorway in your motorhome can be a daunting experience, but by following these steps, you can stay safe while waiting for help:

1. Move to the Hard Shoulder

If possible, carefully steer your vehicle onto the hard shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights immediately to alert other drivers.

2. Exit Safely and Move Away from the Road

Evacuate the vehicle using the doors facing away from the motorway to minimize exposure to traffic. Once outside, move to a safe location well away from the road.

3. Wait in a Safe Place

Find a secure spot, such as behind a barrier, to wait for help. Ensure everyone in your group remains in this safe location until assistance arrives.

4. Stay Alert for Oncoming Traffic

Remain vigilant at all times to ensure you stay clear of oncoming vehicles.

5. Do Not Attempt Repairs Yourself

Avoid attempting to fix your vehicle while on the motorway, as this can be extremely dangerous. It’s best to wait for professional assistance.

6. Leave Animals in the Vehicle

For the safety of both you and your pets, leave any animals inside the vehicle. This helps prevent them from becoming startled or running into traffic.

7. Position Yourself Upstream of Oncoming Traffic

When waiting, stand upstream (facing against the flow of oncoming traffic) to reduce the risk of injury from any unforeseen incidents on the road.

8. Contact Roadside Assistance
