What to Do If Your Motorhome Breaks Down

Step-by-Step Guide for Motorhome Breakdowns

Experiencing a breakdown in your motorhome can be a stressful experience, but with the right steps, you can ensure your safety and get help as quickly as possible. This easy-to-follow guide will walk you through managing a breakdown effectively.

If you have broken down on the motorway, please follow the additional Motorway Breakdown Guidance.

  1. Move to a Safe Location

    • If possible, move the motorhome off the road to a safe spot.

    • If the vehicle cannot be moved and remains in an unsafe location, ensure all passengers are safely situated well away from the vehicle.

  2. Turn on Hazard Lights

    • Activate your hazard lights immediately to warn other drivers.

  3. Wear High-Visibility Jackets

    • Put on your high-visibility jacket, located in the emergency box in your exterior locker. Ensure everyone traveling has one.

  4. Use a Warning Triangle and Stay Safe
    • If it’s safe to do so, place your warning triangle 45 meters (50 yards) behind your motorhome, ensuring it’s on the same side of the road.
    • In hazardous areas, such as near bends or corners, position the triangle before the danger to alert oncoming traffic.
    • Important Note: Never use a warning triangle on a motorway.
    • Additionally, prioritize safety by keeping all individuals well away from oncoming traffic. Ensure no one stands between the motorhome and approaching vehicles.
  5. Contact Breakdown Assistance

    • Locate the nearest telephone or use your mobile to call for help.

    • To find the contact details for your breakdown service click the link and choose the 'Breakdown' option. Fill out the form with your vehicle details and you will be directed to the relevant contact details.
    • If using a mobile, try to identify your exact location to make it easier for the breakdown service to find you.

    • Be ready to provide the make, model, registration number, details about the issue, and any vulnerabilities among passengers.

  6. Stay with Your Vehicle

    • Remain with the vehicle until the breakdown assistance arrives, as they cannot work on an unattended motorhome.

  7. Avoid Repairs

    • Do not attempt to repair the vehicle yourself.

  8. Keep Assistance Updated

    • If the issue resolves itself and you get back on the road before help arrives, notify the breakdown service.
